Jessica Capshaw quoted that maternal health remains a staggering challenge, particularly in the developing world. Globally, a woman dies from complications in childbirth every minute. While Marie Mongan stated that my dream is that every woman, everywhere, will know the joy of a truly safe, comfortable, and satisfying birthing for herself and her baby. Are you anticipating a newborn in your family? Then you must be worried about ensuring best possible care to your daughter/ sister/wife. You will surely expect that your obstetrician should be attending your daughter/ sister/wife as and when labor pains start? If the obstetrician is on holiday? What will you do? It is prudent to check for places which have group of Obstetricians who provide complete round the clock cover. You may not foresee, but if a complication does occur; does the maternity home have critical care backup, blood storage unit facility, good operation theatre, attached neonatal Care & Premature baby Unit, all diagnostics, full time Anesthetists & Physician services, in house round the clock pharmacy, physiotherapy and dietician services? Check on these heads before you enroll your daughter/ sister/wife for antenatal checkup in any maternity home.

The moment a child is born, a mother is also born. It is the most powerful creation to have a life growing inside a woman. I do consider that mothers are gifts from God. In fact, motherhood is the highest & holiest service given to mankind. Hence, I desired that a dedicated space should be created in OCHRI in memory of my mother Smt. Kalyanikutty Amma for ensuring safe motherhood. I am happy with the commendable services being offered to would be mothers by OCHRI Maternal & Child Health team led by Dr.Bindu Menon and Dr.Kuldeep Sukhadeve. This was stated by Udaybhaskar Nair, Chairman, Orange City Hospital & Research Institute.

Dr.Sindhu Bhute, Senior Consultant, OCHRI stated that addressing maternal health means ensuring that all women receive the care they need to be safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Every minute of every day, somewhere in the world and most often in a developing country, a woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. Nearly all maternal deaths occur in the developing world–making maternal mortality the health statistic with the largest disparity between developed and developing countries. New Born babies are also under going this terrible fate.

Dr.Bindu Menon, Consultant Incharge, OCHRI added that for every woman who dies, 30 to 50 women suffer injury, infection, or disease. Pregnancy-related complications are among the leading causes of death and disability for women age 15-49 in developing countries. When a mother dies, children lose their primary caregiver, communities are denied her paid and unpaid labor, and countries forego her contributions to economic and social development. A woman’s death is more than a personal tragedy–it represents an enormous cost to her nation, her community, and her family. Any social and economic investment that has been made in her life is lost. Her family loses her love, her nurturing, and her productivity inside and outside the home. Research has shown that small and affordable measures can significantly reduce the health risks that women face when they become pregnant. Most maternal deaths could be prevented if women had access to appropriate health care during pregnancy, childbirth, and immediately afterwards. Safe motherhood means ensuring that all women receive the care they need to be safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

Dr.Kuldeep Sukhadeve, Consultant Incharge, Pediatrics & Neonatal Care division mentioned that each year, approximately 4 million newborn infants die during the first month of life, and an additional 4 million are stillborn- most of these deaths are due to infection, asphyxia and birth injuries, and complications of premature birth. Low birth weight contributes to newborn death in about 40-80% of cases. Nearly all of these newborn deaths occur in developing countries, and most of these deaths can be prevented if good-quality is available. With the rising survival rate of premature babies, it becomes increasingly important for mothers to consider all options. Mothers can also help to ensure that their newborns are by banking their cord blood, which contains a rich source of stem cells. Newborn health and survival are closely linked to the health of the mother before and during pregnancy, as well as during labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. OCHRI Pediatrics & Neonatal Care unit not only caters to babies from OCHRI but also other hospitals and maternity homes from all over Central India that refer needy babies for quality critical care support.
