Rotary OCHRI Skin Bank review meeting held

Rotary-OCHRI Skin bank is doing a yeoman service for the solace of needy burn victims of Central India by processing cadaveric skin and providing them as skin grafts for burn patients. This 1st Skin Bank of Central India has come as a boon for burn victims of Central India. Rotary Club of Nagpur was instrumental in donating equipment’s for this skin bank which is maintained by Nagpur based Orange City Hospital & Research Institute on no profit basis. The Cadaveric skin which is processed scientifically in this skin bank is subsequently used a biological burn dressing by all major burns surgeons of Central India.  The working methodology & technical knowhow of this bank is provided by National Burns Centre, Mumbai. Although the unit works on no profit no loss basis; basic recurring costs is being charged to incoming patients albeit cadaveric skin graft is 10 times lower than artificial grafts.

Recently, a review meeting was held to review the performance of Rotary-OCHRI Skin bank. Rotary Club of Nagpur appreciated the efforts of OCHRI which has extended a credit limit of around Rs.21 lacs till date to maintain the establishment. Need of more public awareness of skin donation and utilisation was felt and was assured by RCN. RCN conveyed that MOIL has generously agreed to provide a grant initially for Rs.5 lacs wherein needy poor burn patients admitted in government hospitals will now be provided skin free of costs from this skin bank. Meeting by RCN to finalise the said MOU with MOIL will be undertaken shortly.

Amitabha Sharma of Rotary Club of Nagpur spoke on this occasion and prepared a blueprint to ensure optimum utilisation & viability of Rotary OCHRI Skin Bank. At the outset, Dr. Anup Marar- OCHRI Director and Dr. Sameer Jahagirdar, Burns & Plastic Surgeon & Incharge- Rotary OCHRI Skin bank welcomed the members and highlighted the progress. Prominently present on this occasion also were Shri.Simha Chalam, Shri.Roy Thomas and Shri.Santosh Mykalwar, Skin Bank Technician. Shri.Ganesh Iyer and Shri. Pankaj Wadaskar worked hard for the success of this meeting.

Social circles have complimented TEAM OCHRI and Rotary Club of Nagpur to have envisaged such a unique social venture which not only reduces mortality and morbidity of burn victims but reduces their physical and mental agony apart from cost reduction in treatment vis-à-vis artificial grafts. This skin bank is the first such bank of Central India. It is added that only 1/10th of skin is obtained by a fine shaving machine like imported unit from the donors and its does not disfigure the body in any manner.

OCHRI’s Aglee Peedhi team at SCHOOL OF SCHOLARS

Recently a team of OCHRI doctors conducted a preventive health Check-up camp at School of Scholars, Pratap nagar, Nagpur. This general health check-up camp was carried out to facilitate early detection of deficiencies and general health of children. After medical checkup a descriptive report for individual student was provided. The parents of needy children were counseled to take further detailed check-up by specialists. The School authorities and teachers were impressed by the professionalism of the doctors and appreciated and thanked them for their valuable service to the students.

Team of doctors screened 230 students and addressed various important medical issues like general health & hygiene etc. Team of OCHRI doctors comprising of Dr. Jaya Shiwalkar- Pediatrician & School Psychologist, Dr. PC Gupta- Consultant ENT Surgeon, Dr. Abhay Agashe- Eye Specialist, Dr. Sayali Kotambkar & Dr. Tushar Nair- Dentists, Dr. Deepak Dongre- Family Physician, Ms. Mansi Andhare- Dietician screened the students. Br. Virendra and Sr. Rajani Wanjari assisted the doctors in this camp.

Such regular school health examinations help to build a sound foundation for student’s future.”

Dr. Amit Deshpande, MBBS, MS, MCh (Urology), DNB (Genito Urinary Surgery) has joined OCHRI as a Urologist. He has completed MS from GMC, Nagpur, MCh Urology from Christian Medical College, Vellore and DNB in Genito-urinary surgery. Urology combines the management of medical condition, such as urinary-tract infections and benign prostatic hyperplasia, with the management of surgical conditions such as bladder or prostate cancerkidney stones, congenital abnormalities, traumatic injury, and stress incontinence.  Dr. Amit Deshpande has skill and exposure in management of upper urinary tract endo-urology procedures, routine as well as chronic urological problems. He has done MD from Shyam Shah medical College, Rewa, DM (Neurology) from PGMER & Bangur Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata and FINR (Fellowship in Interventional Neurology from KEM Hospital & Research Centre, Pune. He is well trained in neuro interventional procedures like, DSA, Carotid stenting, aneurysmal coilings, flow divertor stentings, cerebral and spinal AVM and AVF embolization’s, intracranial stentings, carotico-cavernous fistula embolization’s and mechanical thrombectomies. OCHRI’s Workplace wellness program for CISF at Nagpur Airport

Recently 2 days long on site health check of all personnel of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was conducted by Orange City Hospital & Research Institute, Nagpur at Nagpur Airport. CISF provides security to Nagpur Airport. Dr. A.K. Verma, OCHRI Occupational Health Physician undertook the annual check-ups screening of all CISF employees at Nagpur airport in this camp.

On this occasion Dr. A.K. Verma stated that employee health screening is a term used to describe a range of checks and tests that help identify risks to health and improve wellbeing among staff. They have the potential to benefit both employees and the organizations they work for.

OCHRI procures Super-slim bronchoscope for kids

Nagpur based Orange City Hospital & Research Institute is continuing to keep itself abreast with recent advancements to justify the trust placed on it by central Indians.

Recently, a Pediatric Bronchoscope EB-530P, Super-slim Pediatric bronchoscope with an impressively thin external diameter of 3.8 mm combined with a 1.2 mm biopsy channel has been commissioned at OCHRI Department of Pediatrics & Pediatric Surgery. Ideal for use in pediatrics, this bronchoscope is equipped with the newest technologies including the ultra-small, Super CCD chip technology, dual light guides, improved tip layout and a single-use suction button. This device facilitates insertion into the peripheral bronchial segments.

Dr. Deepak Goel, OCHRI Pediatric Surgeon said that “Flexible Bronchoscopy is an important procedure for evaluating the pediatric airway, vocal cords, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles. While child is under sedation, a flexible bronchoscope is passed through the nose or mouth into the lungs. The bronchoscope is a special instrument with a tiny camera that allows the pediatric pulmonologist/Pediatric surgeons to view the anatomy through the scope and on a video monitor. The bronchoscope is designed to allow other procedures, such as Broncho alveolar lavage (washing), Trans bronchial biopsy (small pieces of tissue are removed), endobronchial ultrasound, electrocautery or laser treatments.”

Bronchoscopy may be done for Persistent stridor, Persistent wheezing, Hemoptysis, Suspicion of a foreign body, Persistent or recurring atelectasis, Persistent or recurring pneumonia and Localized pulmonary hyperluscency.

On this occasion Dr. Ashish Shukla- OCHRI full time Chest Specialist informed that,” Bronchoscopy is done to diagnose problems with the airway, lungs, or with the lymph nodes in the chest, or to treat problems such as an object or growth in the airway. A bronchoscopy can be used to diagnose lung disease, tumors, chronic cough and chest infections etc.” He added that the bronchoscope is also sometimes used as a treatment tool. For example, a bronchoscopy can allow doctor to deliver medication to lungs or remove an object (foreign object) caught in airways.

As part of social responsibility, OCHRI “SMILE” Dental Department which is managed and maintained by Shenoi Dental Services will be conducting a free weeklong consultancy camp for Dental checkup for patients with complaints of tooth decay, dental caries/cavities, gum disease, tooth infections, mouth ulcer and oral cancer etc. This camp is an initiative towards dental awareness in public, about oral hygiene, common dental ailments their treatments and methods of prevention.
